They disembarked the charter bus one-by-one, to the warm embrace of family and a gathering of local media documenting the return of 52 Jesuit pilgrims from a two-week mission to South America and World Youth Day with Pope Francis.
The pilgrims -- 39 current Jesuit students, 8 recent alumni and 5 chaperones led by Jesuit president Fr. Richard Hermes, S.J. -- spent most of their first week in South America in Paraguay, visiting ancient Jesuit missionary locales. They witnessed some spectacular sites and sights, including the famed Iguazu Falls.
But the highlight of course was the July 23-28 World Youth Day festivities in Rio de Janeiro, where they got up close on several occasions with the first Jesuit Pope - as well as an estimated 3 million others on Rio’s iconic Copacabana Beach.
